Description
In April 2021 we returned to the Campo Bonito mining area, famous for its tungsten and gold mines, south of Oracle, AZ. This time we discovered some new material in a vein in one of the mine adits, and unique in our experience there. This 6 oz. specimen appears to contain powellite along with the standard calcite and scheelite minerals. In daylight the rock looks tan and whitish with lots of black dendrites (photos #6 & 7).
Under short wave lamp the rock has some dots of
bright blue scheelite
in a matrix of
bright red calcite,
with many dots of
golden yellow powellite,
mostly where the black dendrites are located (See photos #1-3).
Using our Convoy S2 long wave flashlight, the powellite also glows
golden yellow
(photos #4 & 5).
Photo #8: Ken takes a well-deserved break from hard rock mining with Molly, our Border Collie.
Weighs 6.0 oz. & measures 2.5 x 2.0 x 1.875 inches. (#CB-53).
