Here's what the original seller Astro Mineral Gallery said: "RARE DOUBLY TERMINATED GEM CALCITE CRYSTAL FROM KALAHARI, N'CHWANING, SOUTH AFRICA"
"A STUNNING CLUSTER OF DOUBLY TERMINATED GEMMY FAINT GOLDEN COLOR CALCITE CRYSTALS FROM KALAHARI, N'CHWANING, SOUTH AFRCIA . VERY UNUSUAL SPECIMEN - RARE! BRIGHT AND SHINY! - MIRROR LUSTER - MINT CONDITION - - RARE OLD LOCALITY "
This piece is classic old specimen from the world famous Kalahari Manganese Field mineral location of South Africa. It's got a rare and beautiful 2-color fluorescence. The Calcite fluoresces red but in the center there's a yellow fluorescence. I've only seen a few Calcites that do that from the Kalahari Manganese Field mines. The others had phantoms inside so I suspect this one does, too, and that it's the phantom that fluoresces yellow.
All the other Calcites that fluoresced like this were big cubic crystals. This is the only one with double-terminated Calcite crystals that fluoresce red with internal yellow fluorescence I was able to obtain for my collection.
I collected all the fluorescent minerals from Africa since 2004 for my Geo Safari Research Project. This piece has long been one of my collection's star pieces, that's why the price must remain high.
The dimensions are 2 x 2 inches inches or 5 cm
Pics taken under SW UV. That's the wavelength you need to see this fluoresce like in the pics.
