    Description

A weird looking, glassy specimen of orange fluorescent slag from the iron smelter at Franklin, NJ. "Franklin Furnace"  was the name of Franklin Borough before 1913. Pretty ugly in daylight, the orange fluorescence is not the brightest and not easy to photograph but the response is there. I am not sure what mineral is causing the fluorescence but I'm guessing it's calcite. There is  a quarry nearby which was known as the Franklin Iron Company Quarry and the limestone there was used as flux for the smelting process. Across the street and a block away is the "Ball's Hill" magnetite mine. A little known fact: Franklin, NJ was an iron mining district long before the zinc mines were exploited. The Ball's Hill area and the Panic Mine are still in existence and once in a while, members of our local club are privileged to collect there. Photos taken under shortwave UV lamps. Size: 3-1/2" x 2" x 1-3/4". Weight is 9.9 oz. or 282 grams.
