Description
Up for bid is a rare fluorescent quartz geode section from the Hwy 70S Roadcut in Woodbury, Tennessee. The outer surface of this is specimen is black oil shale. The hydrocarbons from the oil have given this specimen a very interesting fluorescence response! The quartz is non-fluorescent but the hydrocarbon inclusions fluoresce bright yellow. The matrix fluoresces Blue-White, but not as blue as shown in the pictures. I could adjust the color temp in the camera to get the Yellow to come out right, or the Blue-white to come out right, but not both. I decided the Yellow was the most important color to get right.
This specimen fluoresces under all UV wavelengths. There are some subtle differences in fluorescent colors between SW UV (first picture) and LW UV (second picture). Construction at the road cut where these were collected is finished and bulldozers have covered up the area, so no more of this material will be available.
