Description
Mangano-Calcite/Kutnohorite, Nchwaning II Mine, South Africa - Fluorescent! From the famous Kalahari Manganese Field of South Africa.
2.75 x 2 x 1.6 inches or 6.9 x 5 x 3.25 cm
This is a large, aesthetically pleasing Mangano Calcite but it was sold as Kutnohorite. I don't know much about the difference between Mangano Calcite and Kutnohorite but this looks very much like gemmy, slightly pink Mangano Calcite from the Nchwaning II mine in the Kalahari Manganese Field. The abundance of the chemical element Manganese in the mine gives a beautiful bright orange fluorescence, hence the name “Mangano”, short for Manganese.
Photographed under Short Wave UV, which you'll need to see it like this.
There are interesting crystal formations that are not familiar to me and I've been avidly collecting South African minerals since 2004. Look at the daylight pics and you'll see oddities. The main piece is quite attractive compared to other Mangano-Calcites. That's why the price must remain high.
This beautiful and rare classic from the Kalahari Manganese Field of South Africa was a star piece in my collection. I've enjoyed owning it but I'm willing to sell it now.
The dimensions are 2.75 x 2 x 1.6 inches or 6.9 x 5 x 3.25 cm
Note: I removed the plastic stand long ago so that isn't included.
