Description
Vintage cofradia ceremonial huipil from San Juan Cotzal, Guatemala. Probably from the 3rd
quarter of the 20
th
century. Finely woven three width panel with weft predominant center panel and warp predominant side panels. Supplemental fine wool weft embroidery in purple, blue, pink, and two greens, and supplemental cotton weft embroidery in white, dark green and turquoise. The center panel is longer than the sides, which is common in huipiles from San Juan Cotzal. The neck is trimmed in a red cotton plain weave fabric with chain stitch embroidery in purple, green and blue wool and it has four similar half ovals to represent the cardinal directions.
In very good condition. Minor wear. There is a stain that goes from front to back. It looks like it might be a coffee stain, but I am not sure. I have not tried to remove it.
The dark green and turquoise have bled some.
