    Description

Beautiful vintage servilleta or tzute from Nebaj, Guatemala. Probably 3
    rd
    quarter of the 20
    th
century. This is an uncommon type with white warps and some white wefts (The base is usually all red.), which may indicate another use such as an altar or offering cloth for cofradias or other ceremonial uses. All cotton. Most of the brocading thread seems to be mercerized cotton. Interesting weaving corrections with brocade threads bunched in a couple of places, which was probably done to straighten the weave on the loom. It has a sewn-on tag on the back, which reads “110.” This may be a museum collection tag.
Good condition with some staining and fringe loss.
