Last yearwe climbed up the east side of South Peak in the Tres Hermanas (Three Sisters) Mountains to the Zumwalt Mine in search of more rocks with our "glo-hounds"
Ellie & Molly (photos #9 & 10). Some specimens of white aragonite, like this one, have a coating of green-fluorescing opal & orange-fluorescing caliche (SW).
In daylight the rock has the appearance of a dirty snowball (photos #7 & 8).
Under short wave lamp the
caliche &
opal coatings glow
orange
&
bright
green,
respectively, &
any uncoated aragonite glows
pale blue
(photos #1-3).
The aragonite
phosphoresces
after the SW lamp is turned off.
Under long wave lamp the caliche also glows
orange,
& the aragonite glows
a
paler blue
and
cream
color
(
photos #4-6).
